September 2009: Celergo Named to Inc. 500 List of Fast Growing Companies

Chicago, IL Inc. magazine ranked Celergo No. 98 on its 28th annual Inc. 500, an exclusive ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. The list represents the most comprehensive look at the most important segment of the economy—America’s independent-minded entrepreneurs. Companies such as Microsoft, Zappos, Intuit, GoDaddy, Under Armour, Jamba Juice, American Apparel, Oracle, and hundreds of other powerhouses gained early exposure as members of the Inc. 500.

“If you want to know which companies are going to change the world, look at the Inc. 500,” said Inc. editor Jane Berentson. “These are the most dynamic, fast-growth companies in the nation, the ones finding innovative solutions to problems, creating smart systems, and inventing products we soon discover we can't live without. The Inc. 500 list is Inc. magazine’s tribute to American business ingenuity and ambition.”

Celergo is global payroll service provider to multinationals in over 90 countries. Celergo streamlines a client’s payroll process by utilizing a centralized approach and methodology across the world. “We’re tremendously excited to be recognized for Celergo’s growth,” said Bert Brown, Chief Operating Officer and co-founder of Celergo. “Our team helps clients with complex global business processes and the growth is directly attributed to the success of those partnerships.”

The 2009 Inc. 500, unveiled in the September issue of Inc. magazine and on Inc.com, reported aggregate revenue of $18.4 billion—up significantly from last year’s $13.7 billion—and a median three-year growth rate of 880.5 percent. The companies on this year’s list are also responsible for creating more than 55,000 jobs since their founding, making the Inc. 500 perhaps the best example of the impact private, fast-growing companies can have on the overall U.S. economy. The largest company on the list, flat-panel-TV maker Vizio, broke the $2 billion revenue mark. Complete results of the Inc. 500, including company profiles and an interactive database that can be sorted by industry, region, and other criteria, can be found on Inc.com.

Despite the ongoing recession, the 2009 Inc. 500 offers a glimpse of the future of the U.S. economy. In the health sector, which saw aggregate revenue of $1.1 billion and a 917 percent median growth rate, businesses are moving forward on cancer and stem-cell research, clinical trials, and medication management. More than 25 percent of companies in the energy sector ($2.5 billion aggregate revenue; 942 percent median growth rate) focus on solar and other alternative sources. Fewer than a third of retailers ($356 million aggregate revenue; 914 percent median growth rate) have even a single brick-and-mortar store. And the number of companies providing technical services to the various branches of the federal government continues to rise.

Celergo ranked No. 6 on the list for fastest growing company in the Chicago metropolitan area. Led by CEO Michele Honomichl, Celergo ranked No. 9 on the list for fastest growing companies run by a woman. And Celergo ranked No. 10 on the list for fasted growing companies in the Business Products & Services category.

Methodology

The 2009 Inc. 500 measures revenue growth from 2005 through 2008. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by the first week of 2005, and therefore able to show four full calendar years of sales. Additionally, they had to be U.S.-based, privately held, for profit, and independent—not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies—as of December 31, 2008. (Since then, a number of companies on the list have gone public or been acquired.) The minimum revenue required for 2005 is $200,000; the minimum for 2008 is $2 million.

Detailed information is provided on computing and paying payroll taxes, how to handle garnishments and other deductions, how to determine whether workers are employees or independent contractors, how to treat sick pay, what questions to ask when your company is setting up a payroll in a new country, and how to deal with the payroll ramifications of a merger, acquisition, or divestiture. CEO Michele Honomichl presented at the APA Annual Congress.  Dates were May 19 - 23, 2009.

Thank you to everyone who attended her session on International Payroll Practices!

The presentation “International Payrolls – Paying foreign nationals Worldwide” provided participants an overview of international pay practices and how they differ from country to country. Michele covered how employment contracts, benefits, pay dates, vacation timing, holidays, time reporting, collective agreements and more integrate together to form the international payroll process.

The American Payroll Association's (APA) annual conference has over 125 workshops, a payroll and finance exhibit hall, plus networking and motivational opportunities.  The 27th Annual Congress was held at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California.

See the APA website for additional information.

Janet Roome, Celergo Sr. Project Manager, presented a session on “Shadow Payrolls” at APA’s 27th Annual Congress, May 19 - 23 in Long Beach, California.

The presentation covered various aspects of ensuring companies are maintaining their compliance on expatriate host taxes. Topics included: What is a shadow payroll? When is a shadow payroll required? How to set-up a shadow payroll? How are shadow payrolls integrated with local payrolls in each host country? How is US shadow payroll different than shadow payrolls in other countries?

With over 20 years of payroll experience, Janet supports the expatriate practice at Celergo. Prior to joining Celergo, Janet worked for Deloitte & Touche on the DaimlerChrysler account. She has been a CPP since 1994 and a member of APA since 1995. She volunteers on the APA Hotline Referral Committee and the Strategic Payroll Leadership Task Force where she is a member of the Global Payroll Committee.

Celergo manages cash and tax payrolls for its expatriate clients, thereby improving their efficiency, internal controls, and compliance in one of the most complex areas of payroll administration.

Michele Honomichl and Janet Roome presented “Global Payroll: A Case Study” at APA’s 27th American Congress, May 19 – 23, 2009 in Long Beach, California.

This session illustrated a case study of a client that “spun-out” from a parent organization, which required the HR team to launch payroll in over 20 countries with little internal support. The presentation covered challenges of the launch including data gathering, parallel testing, benefits, communication, accounting, and funding. Attendees learned about how this company overcame these challenges to create a world class consolidated payroll program worldwide.

Celergo has supported numerous companies which were divested or spun-out from a parent organization. These clients face different issues than a client with a current global foot print looking to improve their payroll processing. Divestitures need to set-up entities, determine benefits, review collective agreements, determine pay dates, and define funding methodologies. Through Celergo’s extensive experience with these situations, its experienced staff can provide invaluable insight into how to overcome the challenges of launching an international payroll in an often compressed timeframe.

Celergo Exhibited at Society of Human Resource Management's Global Conference and Exhibition on March 30 - April 1, 2009.
